Friends, CANADIANS, lend me your ears.

Fri Dec 12, 2008, 9:19 PM

ookk soo here's the deal,
basicly just got the bomb shell tossed
to me today by my mom that we may or may not
be able to afford me going to 4 years of college at my current
one cuz it's expensive as hell.

It sort of ruins my plans of studying
abroad.. but i got thinking [and maybe this was stupid]
that it may be cheaper to attend school in canada
than the one I'm currently attending.

SOOO
my canadian friends,
do any of you guys know any
good/cheap[ish] art schools in canada?

schools here are good, and cheaper than the U.S. you might even get some money from our governement to come study here. (particuly in Quebec)

i overheard that tuition at Concordia (in montreal) was as low as $1,800/yr for residents of the province...or something like that.

tuition here is a tad cheaper than the u.s. in general, the more you get to toronto, the more it may increase.

provinces like bc and alberta, i've heard are somewhat cheap.
(you might like simon fraser in bc, their programs are based on interdisciplinary side of art)

as for toronto, there's ryerson (which used to be a tech. college, so they're focused a little on the techinical side of art) there's also york u, and the OCAD (but i've heard ok things about it)

as for montreal, theres concordia, but it's a tad hard to get into.

come by and visit!
canada's not that expensive to travel to, and we're not as fucked as you guys are with the economy and shit...

I'm not sure how cheap it is
but there's the Emily Carr University of Art and Design that's on Granville Island in Vancouver, British Columbia
and it's one of the top art schools in Canada.
Plus it's on the coast, and the coast is beautiful.
There's also The Art Institute of Vancouver, and I've heard it was really good.

Well yes... it is cheaper. I would go to school in the states but likewise money is a factor for me to. Keep in mind you'll be paying more than the typical Canadian student because you've got more bills, residence, and other documents to pay for. For art, Nova Scotia school of design, Ontario college of art and design, and Emily Carr in BC. If you want to specialize in photography, Ryerson in Ontario where I go is pretty good. The image arts program it top notch. Otherwise I think Emily Carr has a good program and apparently "Guelph University" does too but I am queasy about that saying. Keep in mind if you go to an art college your first year will be art fundamentals. Very little photography. Its all drawing painting and sculpting. And your portfolio for application has to be diverse. Full of other stuff like poetry and paintings... I went through this process and it was a pain in the ass cause I hate drawing. But if your fine with that then go ahead. So yeah, it is cheaper. You will be paying more because your not a citizen. I'd say do your research, make a few calls and see what happens. If you want to apply for next year you need to submit your applications by I think January - Early March.

I go to Ryerson. First year is tech. The last 3 years are all abstract.

:iconphmall:
i personally believe ryerson is just all hype.
especially with the photo...sorry.."image arts" program.
:iconrice-tactics:
"Hype" doesn't come from nowhere. Yeah sure other universities have good programs as well, but that doesn't mean you should dismiss the image arts... sorry. "photo" program completely.

but
you'd still be an international student,
meaning you'd still pay about 13 grand a year
